VIDEO - The Orchestra Gold Story

Led by the talented and ferocious Mariam Diakite from Bamako, Oakland-based Orchestra Gold (OG) plays, promotes, and preserves OldStyle music from Mali, West Africa.

OG hypnotizes audiences with danceable, funky, high-energy 1960's orchestra music from Mali, ending with hot & sweaty folkloric drumming, song and dance. These roots are colored by tinges of 60ís era analog pyschedelic rock and funk from all over West Africa.

The ongoing civil unrest and economic turmoil have put the squeeze on Maliís music and the people who create it. OG showcases a little known corner of this large musical heritage: the big band era of Malian music, which was kicked off by Independence from France in 1961. This era saw a cultural renaissance of music; Old folkloric began to be reinterpreted by western instrumes such as guitar, bass, drums and horns.

The building blocks of OGís music are folkloric songs, often told in parable. These songs contain inspiration, wisdom, and deep insight into the human condition. They have served to uplift Malians beyond the harsh realities of daily life. Especially in this time of social turbulence, this age-old wisdom brings us a renewed perspective on modern-day existence.
