Six-time Austin Music Award winners for Best World Music Band, Atash, will return to California in June, bringing with them their colleagues and collaborators Fareed Haque, Elias Lammam, and Abbos Kosimov. Stops on the tour include Nectar Lounge in Seattle (6/29), Ashkenaz in Berkeley (7/1), Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz (7/2), and the city of El Cerrito's One World 4th of July Festival (7/4).

Austin, a city known for fostering blues and outlaw country artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Willie Nelson, is home to a vibrant and eclectic music scene. An underground world music movement has steadily grown within the city since at least the 1970s, when Hamza Al-Din used to be a professor at the University of Texas. Atash began to emerge in the late 1990s, slowly climbing to the top of the heap, and regarded by many as innovators and trailblazers in the art of synthesizing traditions of the world in high energy, uplifting performances. Their singular sound comes from a seamless concoction of instruments and musical elements instruments culled from varied regions of the world, including the mystical approaches of Sufi, Middle Eastern, and Indian traditions, the harmonic and rhythmic vitality of flamenco and jazz, the energy of rock and west African music, and textures of western classical orchestration. Haque adds his spellbinding world jazz approach to the guitar, melding eastern and western elements in an engaging display of virtuous musicality.

Claiming the title of “Austin’s Best-Kept Secret” by the Austin Chronicle, Atash has dazzled audiences around the world for close to two decades. Recent trips to California have included the Everything is Music Tour in 2014 and an appearance at the Joshua Tree Music Festival in 2015.

"What makes the nine-person Austin ensemble's ambitious musicality truly transformative is its dedication to a deepening soulfulness through virtuosity."
–Greg Beets, Austin Chronicle
