NOBODY'S OWN hits Moe's Alleyt for their long awaited return bringing their unique blend of Rock Soul Funk & Hip-Hop. Bay Area Hip-Hop powerhouse THE REC-LEAGUE ALL STARS open the show featuring Cumulus (aka Q’m), Grip Grand, Haji P, MF Shalem, Proe, Richie Cunning, No Wonder, and Rob Rush.
ABOUT NOBODY'S OWN
Nobody's Own Entertains listeners with a fusion of genres that sparks a fire of interest across generational borders. Not only does their music challenge predisposed musical comfort zones, but it broadens the listener’s awareness of style, substance and message with mixtures of hip hop, jazz, funk, R&B and rock. Moving from the title track, “Freak Show” with its soulful sardonic look at idiosyncratic fan response, to the introspective musings of “Last Call” with the premature demands of family, loss, and learning taking place in a young woman’s life, to the closing song, “Thank You”, you are taken on a journey of richly layered vocals with an eclectic mix of instruments and styles. On “Midnight Zydeco” the listener is invited to step away for a moment to a sultry and balmy celebration of late night revelers escaping the pressures of life’s daily demands to a few hours of late night musical panacea. And, in some ways Nobody’s Own offers just the type of musical “cure all” for any listener’s discontent towards one style or another. With poignant lyrics and energized delivery, Nobody’s Own provokes their audience to active listening while entertaining the masses with showmanship and style. Nobody’s Own began as Ryan Haile (aka: Conscious) and Natalie Singley (aka: Nat) who were previously part of the hugely popular Santa Cruz hip hop group, Duce Company. Ryan’s musical influences range from Tom Waits to Sam Cooke, from Common and The Roots to Charles Mingus and Jobim. Having lived in Brazil as a child and part of a nomadic family, Conscious was exposed at an early age to cultural and musical diversity. Originally making music as a hip hop MC, Conscious soon emerged into broader styles of music, including playing the guitar to add interesting acoustic twists to live and studio performances. From a young age, Natalie, a native of Santa Cruz, CA was trained to sing classically. However, she discovered her passion for singing was more contemporary and that her own life experience was an ample source for not only her “grip the mic” lyrics, but the ability to deliver her lines with an intensity and rhythm that draws even the most casual listener to an understanding of her life. Musical influence from Lauren Hill, Stevie Wonder, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Annie Lennox and Elton John all speak to the diverse flavor of Natalie’s seductive styling. Originality and creativity have been hallmarks of Nobody’s Own since the beginning, but never to be accused of becoming static, the recent addition of a live band including keyboards, guitar, bass and drums brings the organic sound back to the mix.
ABOUT THE REC LEAGUE
Warning—the following information is classified For Your Eyes Only. Read immediately. Handle with care. This press release will self-destruct.
Every once in a great while, God-given talent and geographical proximity combine to form a kind of perfect storm of artistic expression, a superhuman movement that shocks the world. Cubism, for example. Or the Wu-Tang Clan. After all, John Lennon and Paul McCartney are both musical geniuses, but what’s extraordinary is that they were in the same band. With George Harrison. When they were in grammar school. I mean, seriously, what are the odds on that shit? Well, my friend, all I can say is brace yourself, because it’s happening again. The tide is turning. The planets have aligned. So take off your haterpants, put on your gold chain, and get ready to love rap again—Rec-League is in the building.
The Rec-League All-Stars are Northern California’s preeminent hip-hop crew you’ve never heard of, a reputation cemented by countless live shows, albums, mixtapes, and memorable appearances on highly-respected radio stations from underground classic KZSU (on DJ Kevvy Kev’s legendary show The Drum) to commercial heavyweight KDON (central Cali’s urban-music powerhouse). Rarely have so many high-quality rappers come together under one banner.
Stepping straight out the golden age and into the future, the members of the Rec—Cumulus (aka Q’m), Grip Grand, Haji P, MF Shalem, Proe, Richie Cunning, No Wonder, and Rob Rush—come correct with complimentary styles that represent different sides of the same classic hip-hop story. And, like the fabled crews of yesteryear, they present a unified sonic front, with versatile in-house production from rappers Grip, Proe, and Rich C, as well as from DJ/producer Shalem.
And the world is taking notice. Fully 50% of the group’s six rappers have been honored by Urb Magazine as part of its annual Next…campaign (Grip Grand was previously featured in the magazine’s Next 100 issue, while Rich C and Rob Rush are currently making the rounds through Urb’s online Next 1000). In addition, Grip has worked with A.G. and Percee P; Shalem was Sage Francis’ original DJ; and on a press junket through North Carolina, Barack Obama totally bought a copy of the Brown Company album starring Haji P. In short, word is getting around: Rec-League is the truth.
From self-pressed vinyl in the 90’s to their own digital blog-erhood and superstore in the now (www.routinefly.com); from selling 4000 copies of a single EP in Japan to being sampled by Madlib; the Rec-League All-Stars have been there and done that. And with a hot new compilation in the chamber, plus full-length bangers from both Rich C (Night Train) and Q’m (The Happy Hour) in the clip, it looks like they’ll be here for a long while to come. Rec-League is the team of tomorrow, today. See you at the game… |
